SEO Strategies That Help Contractors Win More Jobs

SEO Strategies That Help Contractors Win More Jobs

I get shown a lot of contractor websites on discovery calls, and I can usually tell within about thirty seconds whether SEO is actually going to move the needle or whether we’re going to be fixing foundations first. It’s rarely the flashy stuff that’s missing. It’s the basics done properly, consistently, over time.

That’s the honest truth behind most of the “we can’t seem to win enough jobs online” conversations I have with marketing managers and business owners in this sector.

I spent years running lead generation for a boiler installation business that scaled past £65 million in turnover, so I’ve seen what actually converts a stranger searching Google into a booked engineer visit, and what just looks good in a proposal deck.

This post is the strategy breakdown I wish someone had handed me a decade ago. No fluff, just the tactics that genuinely win jobs for boiler, solar, heat pump, air conditioning and EV charger installers.

Why Does Google Business Profile Matter More Than Most Contractors Realise?

If I had to pick one single asset that generates the fastest, highest-intent leads for a local installer, it’s a properly optimised Google Business Profile. Businesses appearing in the local three-pack receive around 126% more traffic and roughly 93% more calls, clicks and direction requests than listings sitting just below them on the same results page.

That’s not a marginal gain, that’s the difference between a full diary and a quiet one.

What Actually Moves The Needle On Your Profile?

Getting this right isn’t complicated, but it does need discipline:

  • Choose the most specific primary category available, “Heating Contractor” or “Air Conditioning Contractor” rather than a generic “Contractor” listing
  • Keep your business name, address and phone number identical across your profile, your website footer and every directory you’re listed on
  • List the towns you genuinely serve rather than spamming every postcode within fifty miles
  • Upload real job photos regularly, installs, vans, completed work, not stock imagery
  • Seed your own Q&A section with the questions customers actually ask, things like accreditation, emergency callout availability and coverage area

Google Business Profile signals account for roughly a third of local pack ranking weight according to Whitespark’s ranking factors research, with on-page SEO and review signals making up most of the rest.

A fully complete, verified profile gets around seven times more clicks than an incomplete one, and that gap only widens the more competitive your local market gets.

How Much Do Reviews Actually Influence New Business?

This one genuinely surprises people when I walk them through the numbers. Around 97% of consumers now read reviews before choosing a local business, and 41% say they “always” read them before deciding, up sharply from the year before. Nearly half of consumers only consider businesses rated 4.5 stars or higher, and roughly half say they trust online reviews as much as a personal recommendation from someone they know.

For a boiler or heat pump installer, where the job means letting someone into a customer’s home to work on expensive, safety-critical equipment, that trust threshold matters more than almost any other sector.

Each additional genuine review correlates with a meaningful uplift in search impressions, website visits and calls, according to Birdeye’s most recent dataset. It’s a compounding asset, and it’s one most contractors still leave to chance rather than building deliberately into their process.

How Do You Build A Consistent Review Habit?

The businesses that do this well bake it into their operational process rather than treating it as an afterthought. Ask for a review at the point the job is signed off, while the customer is still pleased with the finished work, not weeks later when the memory has faded. Respond to every review, positive or negative, because consumers are considerably more likely to choose a business that actively engages with feedback.

And make sure reviews mention the actual service, “fixed our boiler within the hour” carries far more weight for a boiler repair search than a generic five-star rating with no detail attached.

What Content Actually Ranks For Installation Businesses?

I see a lot of installer websites with a single generic “services” page trying to rank for everything from boiler servicing to full heat pump installations. It doesn’t work, because it doesn’t match how people actually search or what Google expects to see for a genuine commercial intent query.

Why Do You Need Dedicated Service Pages, Not One Generic Page?

Each core service needs its own page, written specifically for that job. A page for “air source heat pump installation” needs to open by addressing the search and the location directly, cover what’s involved, realistic costs, available grants like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, and why a customer should choose you over a competitor.

The same logic applies separately to solar panel installation, EV charger fitting, air conditioning and boiler replacement. Folding them all into one page dilutes your relevance for every single one of them.

Why Do Location Pages Need To Be Genuinely Different From Each Other?

If you cover multiple towns, each needs a properly written page, not the same template with the town name swapped out. Google can tell the difference, and so can customers. Reference genuinely local detail where it’s relevant, housing stock, common issues in older properties in that area, and combine that with real reviews and job photos from that specific location.

Thin, duplicated location pages are one of the most common reasons I see installer websites plateau despite months of content output.

What Role Does FAQ Content Play?

Seeding genuine FAQ content, marked up with proper schema, does double duty. It answers the exact questions customers are typing into Google before they’ll pick up the phone, “how much does a heat pump installation cost in the UK,” “is my boiler covered under warranty,” “how long does an EV charger installation take.”

And increasingly, this same structured, clearly answered content is what AI platforms like ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews pull from when someone asks the same question conversationally rather than typing it into a search bar.

Why Is Technical SEO The Part Most Contractors Skip?

Nobody gets excited about technical SEO on a sales call, but it’s the difference between all your other work actually being found or sitting invisible on a broken foundation. Site speed genuinely matters, particularly on mobile, where the majority of local searches happen. A single added tap or a few extra seconds of load time on a mobile quote form can reduce conversion by anywhere from 8% to over 20% in home services specifically.

What Should Be On Every Technical SEO Checklist?

At minimum, I want to see compressed images so job galleries don’t slow pages down, clean site architecture that separates services and locations logically, schema markup for local business, services and FAQs, and a genuinely mobile-friendly build with a tap-to-call phone number, not plain text that forces someone to copy and paste it manually.

These fixes don’t generate headlines, but they’re consistently among the fastest wins we deliver for clients in the first two to three months of an engagement.

How Do You Actually Turn That Traffic Into Booked Jobs?

Here’s a statistic that stops a lot of business owners in their tracks. The average contractor and construction website converts at somewhere between 1.9% and 3.7%, noticeably lower than plumbing or pest control, which often convert at 12% to 16%. That means most installer websites are leaking a huge proportion of the traffic local SEO is working hard to generate.

What Separates A High-Converting Quote Page From A Weak One?

The strongest performing pages I’ve seen keep the form short, three or four fields maximum for the initial enquiry, name, phone, postcode and job type, with anything else gathered on the follow-up call rather than upfront.

They put a single, clear call to action above the fold, “Request a Quote” or “Book a Site Visit,” repeated at sensible points down the page rather than buried at the bottom. And they show proof before asking for the enquiry, reviews, accreditations, real project photos, so the customer feels confident before they’ve even filled anything in.

Why Does Response Speed Matter As Much As The Website Itself?

This is the part that gets forgotten once the lead lands. Around 78% of customers go with whichever company responds first, and responding within roughly a minute can lift conversion by several times over a slow response. I’ve watched businesses spend months improving rankings only to lose the resulting leads to a competitor who simply picked up the phone faster.

SEO gets someone to your door, your process decides whether they walk through it.

How Do These Strategies Fit Together For Long Term Growth?

None of these tactics work particularly well in isolation. A perfectly optimised Google Business Profile with no service pages behind it won’t hold rankings. Beautiful service pages with a broken, slow website won’t convert.

Strong technical foundations with no reviews won’t build the trust needed for someone to book a home visit. It’s the combination, built consistently over months rather than weeks, that produces the compounding growth installers actually need.

This is exactly the kind of structured, twelve to eighteen month programme we build at Essheo. Every senior person on our team has spent eight or more years working in genuinely hard to rank sectors, going up directly against household names like MoneySuperMarket, GoCompare and uSwitch, not soft niches where any generalist agency can claim an easy win.

Strategies we’ve designed and implemented within our SEO service for service based businesses have contributed to over £45 million in combined client revenue across the last two years alone, and we approach visibility as something that spans Google, AI platforms, YouTube and social channels, not just one search bar.

Ready To Turn More Searches Into Booked Jobs?

If you recognise your own website somewhere in this post, a decent flow of traffic that isn’t converting the way it should, or rankings that have plateaued despite months of effort, it’s worth a proper conversation rather than another generic audit template.

I set Essheo up to run genuinely hands-on SEO programmes for boiler, solar, heat pump, air conditioning and EV charger installation businesses, built from real operational experience rather than agency theory. We’ll look honestly at where your current site is losing ground, what’s realistically achievable in the first few months, and what a structured plan looks like for turning your search visibility into a consistent pipeline of booked jobs.
